  • How do I join MDBC as a General Member?
Attend our off-season practices, which run from September to March! We ask that you commit to ONE (1) of each practice type per week. Here are the specific steps: Please sign up for dryland practices using our EventBrite page, under the "Sign Ups" tab, which will be released at the start of every week (Monday latest). Sign a safety waiver and bring it to your first practice/email a signed, scanned copy to macdboat@gmail.com before your first practice. Pay your General Membership fee ($20.00 CAD, see Fees for more details) by your SECOND dryland. This fee will cover ALL practices and fitness training for off-season practices.
  • I've never paddled before! Do I need prior experience to join MDBC?
Nope! All are welcome, regardless of previous experience! Our coaches run a learn-to-paddle program for newcomers, so that you can develop a good foundation.
  • When do off-season practices officially start?
Off-season practices have officially started!! In case you weren't able to make it to the general meeting in September and would still like to join us, feel free to contact us through one of our socials (and we look forward to meeting you :))
  • Can I join as a recreational member/to just try out the sport?
Of course! As mentioned previously, our practices are open for all to join from September to March. We ask that all general members pay a $20.00 CAD fee to join us for the off-season - as mentioned, this fee goes towards ALL practices and fitness testing for this period. Be warned though: our sport and its community are AMAZING, regardless of whether you're joining recreationally or competitively. Many fall in love with it!!!
  • What's a "fitness test"? Are they mandatory for everyone?"
Throughout the school year we run semesterly fitness tests to gauge skill, strength, endurance, and overall improvement! These are mandatory for those who are thinking of trying out for our competitive roster. Even if you are just joining us recreationally, we highly recommend that you complete these tests, as they help you identify where you can improve for the future!
  • Can I join practices even though I'm not that fit?
All individuals from all fitness backgrounds are welcome to join MDBC!
  • How do I cancel for a dryland/pool practice if I can't make it?
If you're not able to make it to your dryland/pool practice after having signed up for one, please: Cancel through Eventbrite at least two hours prior to the dryland/pool practice you've signed up for Contact an exec to let them know that you cancelled and why (either through Discord, Instagram, or email) As long as you cancel before the two hours, you won't lose an attendance point for that practice!
  • How do I cancel through Eventbrite?
    1. Head over to whichever email that you used to sign up with to get your tickets 2. Find the email confirmation for those tickets - should look something like this: 3. Click on "Go to My Tickets" - leads you to a page like this: 4. Click on "Cancel Order" 5. Let an exec know that you cancelled to confirm your cancellation!
  • What happens if I'm sick or injured? Do I lose an attendance point?
If you're sick/injured/dealing with extenuating circumstances, please don't push yourself to come to practice, and don't worry about the attendance point! We're usually more than understanding when it comes to not being able to make it to drylands/pool due to being sick, injured, etc., and while we definitely love that you're all so eager to come and workout, your health comes first (please rest up and make sure you're all taking care of yourselves)! We always take sickness/injury into account when considering attendance for our roster decisions, so we'll keep it in mind if you had to miss a few weeks because of the flu. Just make sure to let an exec know why you can't make it, and keep us updated of course (communication is key :))
  • Is there a competitive team? How many boats do you have?
Yes! Our competitive team has 2 boats (Holy Mac-Row & Holy Mac-A-Rowni) that compete at several regattas (competitions) during the summer months. Join us and help us win more medals!!
  • Do I get a spot automatically on the competitive team? Or is there a formal competitive roster selection process?
MDBC has a formal roster selection process (see question 3), but during the school year, we operate as a general club. From September to March, you can join our practices and try out the sport with no obligations - if you fulfill the criteria for selection, you can apply for the competitive team then!
  • How do I join the competitive team?
To join the competitive team, you must: - Attend dryland and pool practices regularly throughout the year (earn attendance points) - Complete two (2) fitness tests: one in the Fall semester and one in the Winter semester - Complete a formal written application to the team (releases in March) - Display the following characteristics (including, but not limited to): - Team-player mentality - Determination - Optimism - Passion for the sport
  • What regattas do you compete at?
Historically, we've competed (and medalled!) at the Milton, Pickering, Toronto Islands, and Montreal Regattas!
  • How much does it cost to join MDBC?
This depends on whether you decide to apply for our competitive roster. To join as a general member for the off-season (September to March), we ask that all members pay a $20.00 CAD fee by their SECOND dryland practice (your first practice is free! See question 2 for more details). This fee covers practices for the entire period. If you apply and are selected for our competitive roster, you will have to pay an additional fee. For our last on-water season, the fee was ~$440.00 CAD (one of the lowest in Ontario!), which covered boat rentals, regatta fees, jerseys, and other optional team merch.
  • Are there any general member fees?
Yes! As mentioned, to join us for our off-season practices, we ask that all general members pay a $20.00 fee at their SECOND dryland practice. We allow everyone ONE (1) trial dryland practice, free-of-charge to try out the sport and our community. This general fee goes towards our practices (dryland and pool) and fitness testing.
  • How do I pay?
We accept both cash (given to an executive) AND e-transfer (at macdboat@gmail.com)!
  • Do you subsidize fees/offer alternative payment plans for those in financial need?
YES!! We believe that finances SHOULD NOT be a barrier to joining this sport and our community. If you are unable to pay/are experiencing difficulty paying our general membership or roster fees, please reach out to us at macdboat@gmail.com, and we will sort something out for you!
